Earlier this month a young couple found a stray cat at a 7-11 in Golden Gate Estates in east Collier County and northeast of Naples, Florida. They brought the cat to the Naples Cat Alliance where Megan Sobera scanned it for a microchip. There was a microchip but the phone numbers were not active.
According to the microchip info, the cat’s name was Sky and she was (now) 12 years old. When she was originally microchipped, she lived in the Central Naples area, some 20 miles or so from where she was found.
Megan posted online that this cat had been found and the microchip was a dead end.
Members of the Lost Pet Finder of Collier County group contacted Megan for the microchip number, as they often had great luck on tracing unregistered or outdated microchips. This all volunteer group goes far and beyond the posting of pets. Their team often goes out into the field to assist with putting up flyers, following up on sightings, and helping to trap lost pets.
Fortunately they were able to trace the microchip to several family members who were able to point them in the direction of Kansas, where Sky’s family had moved.

You can imagine the family’s excitement when they got the call from Caroline of Lost Pet Finder! They thought Sky had been stolen from them when they lived in Naples, 7 1/2 years earlier!
How to get Sky home?
Melissa Sousley, a cat lover and owner happened to see a repost of the Naples Cat Alliance post about Sky needing to get transported to Kansas City while viewing a group page she frequents called Tiny Kittens Unite. As luck would have it, Melissa who lives in Kansas City was in Florida for work in the coming days. Flying with a kitty was not new to her, having actually rescued a cat of her own in Florida some years ago and transporting it back home, as well as another long distance adoption. So she reached out on the Naples Cat Alliance page to offer her services to help!
With a transporter ready, willing and able, The Lost Pet Finder’s Search and Rescue team, consisting of Sue Law, Tonya and Tom Stanley and Caroline Mosher, stepped up and paid the Veterinary fees, airfare and outfitted her in a new harness and leash. Even a travel carrier for the plane was provided, thanks to a donation by Lisa Ernst-Kiefer.
