More and more, attention and exposure is being focused on THE LINK between animal abuse and family violence.
The National Link Coalition notes on it’s website “Animal maltreatment is often “the tip of the iceberg” and the first warning sign of an individual or family in trouble. “
In addition, they note “Abuse is often cyclical and inter-generational. The more cases of human and animal abuse that are reported, and the earlier that professionals can intervene to break the cycles of violence, the higher the rate of success.”
Through increased awareness of the connection more strides can be made to address violence earlier saving more animals and humans.
The American Humane Association explains it as:
“A correlation between animal abuse, family violence and other forms of community violence has been established. Child and animal protection professionals have recognized The Link®, noting that abuse of both children and animals is connected in a self-perpetuating cycle of violence. When animals in a home are abused or neglected, it is a warning sign that others in the household may not be safe. In addition, children who witness animal abuse are at a greater risk of becoming abusers themselves.”
“The article explores the connection between cruelty to animals and human violence. In particular, it examines animal abuse perpetrated by adolescents as a predictor of later human violence.”
